TCS just announced 40,000 fresher hires for 2026. Here's how a Punjab student actually gets one.

MITS Faculty May 14, 2026 7 min read

Last week, TCS said the quiet part out loud: 40,000 fresher hires for FY 2026-27.

The screenshot has been doing the rounds on every BCA WhatsApp group from GNDU to LPU. People are forwarding it like they forwarded GATE results.

Here's the part nobody is mentioning: TCS hired ~42,000 freshers in 2024 too. And 35,000 the year before. This isn't a special announcement — it's their normal annual hiring cycle dressed up in a press release.

The real question isn't whether TCS is hiring. It's whether you'll be one of the 40,000 — or one of the 4 lakh who get rejected.

How TCS Actually Hires Freshers (Three Doors)

Forget what your senior at Khalsa College told you. As of 2026, TCS has three distinct hiring channels:

Door 1 — TCS NQT (National Qualifier Test) - Open to anyone with 60% throughout + no active backlog - Happens 4 times a year - The "default" path — 60% of fresher hires come from here - Salary band: ₹3.36 LPA → ₹4.05 LPA → ₹7 LPA depending on score

Door 2 — TCS Digital / Prime - For top-scoring NQT candidates - Salary band: ₹7-11.5 LPA - Tougher coding test, deeper interviews

Door 3 — Campus Drive - Only at the colleges TCS visits (varies year-to-year) - Decent shot if your college makes the list - Many Tier-2 Punjab colleges are NOT on this list

If you're outside Tier-1 college campus drives, your only realistic path is Door 1.

The Part Punjab Students Mess Up

Here's what I see every batch at MITS Academy. Students prepare for TCS NQT exactly like they prepared for class tests in college — last-minute, syllabus-driven, low intensity.

TCS NQT does not work that way.

It has 5 sections: Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability, Reasoning Ability, Programming Logic, and Coding. The coding section is what knocks out 70% of candidates from Punjab Tier-2 colleges.

The coding section asks for 2 problems in 30 minutes in any of C / C++ / Java / Python / Perl. Not algorithm-heavy LeetCode hard problems. Mostly arrays, strings, conditional logic, basic loops.

Students fail it because: 1. They haven't touched real code in 6 months (only theory exams) 2. They prepare in C from their college syllabus, but TCS now scores Python higher (faster to write) 3. They've never written code under time pressure 4. They submit a brute-force solution that times out on edge cases

The Realistic Prep Plan (3 Months)

If your TCS NQT is 3 months away, here's the schedule that works:

Weeks 1-4 — Programming Fluency - Pick Python or Java. Stick with it. - Solve 60-80 easy problems on HackerRank / LeetCode - Focus areas: strings, arrays, basic math, conditionals - 1 hour/day, every day

Weeks 5-8 — Aptitude Grind - Indiabix + Career Ride for verbal + reasoning - Average score yourself daily — track improvement - 1.5 hours/day

Weeks 9-12 — Mock Tests + Code Speed - Full-length mock TCS NQT every weekend - Time yourself ruthlessly - Review every wrong answer — don't skip

If your prep window is shorter (1 month), drop aptitude practice to focus only on coding. You can fake aptitude with calm + careful reading. You can't fake coding fluency.

What MITS Academy Students Are Doing Right

We run a structured TCS NQT prep cohort every quarter as part of our [Python](/courses/python) and [Java](/courses/java) courses. Here's what differentiates them:

  • Code daily for the entire course — not just review week before exam. By NQT day, our students have shipped 40-60 small programs.
  • Mock interviews with TCS-format questions — including the dreaded "describe your project in 5 minutes" task that fresh grads stumble through.
  • Resume + email-id rules — small things like a clean college-issued email-id (not "rocky4567@gmail.com") improve longlist rates measurably.

70% of our students who cleared NQT also cleared the technical interview round. The 30% who didn't usually failed on a 2nd-language question (HR asks "What's polymorphism in C++?" — they only know Python). We now teach two languages for that exact reason.

What If You Don't Crack TCS?

Honest truth: TCS NQT is one shot. You can retake quarterly, but that means waiting. Meanwhile:

  • Infosys HackWithInfy opens in July
  • Wipro NLTH opens in August
  • Capgemini drives happen rolling through the year
  • Tier-2 IT firms in Mohali (Net Solutions, Innovecture, RChilli, SourceFuse) hire continuously — and often pay better

In 2025, we had 3 students who failed TCS NQT and got placed at Mohali product startups within 60 days — at higher salaries than the TCS Ninja band.

Failing one exam isn't the end. Treating any one exam as your only path is the actual problem.

Two Things to Do This Week

  • . Register for the next TCS NQT. Even if you're not ready. The deadline is the forcing function. Sign up at tcsionhub.in.
  • . Start coding daily, today. Not Monday. Today. 30 minutes is fine to begin. Compounding only kicks in if you start.

If you're stuck on where to begin — we run free counselling at MITS Academy. Walk in any weekday between 11 AM and 6 PM.
