## How to Write a Cover Letter for IT Jobs in India 2026

Most Indian job seekers don't write cover letters. They attach a resume and submit. This creates an opportunity — when everyone else sends only a resume, a thoughtful cover letter makes you stand out.

This guide covers what a good cover letter looks like for IT roles in India, what to include, what to avoid, and gives complete templates.

Do Indian Employers Read Cover Letters?

Honestly: depends.

At large IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) with mass recruiting: unlikely to be read. These companies process thousands of applications algorithmically.

At digital agencies, startups, and SMEs: often read — especially if the hiring manager is small-team and reviewing personally. For companies with 10–100 employees, a strong cover letter can genuinely differentiate you.

At companies where you apply via email directly (not a job portal): almost always read. When you email your application directly to hr@companyname.com, the cover letter is the email body.

When to always write a cover letter: - Applying via direct email - Applying to a small company where you know the hiring manager's name - Applying for a role where your background isn't an exact fit (cover letter explains why you're still right for the role) - Applying for roles at companies you specifically want to work at (shows genuine interest)

What Goes in a Cover Letter

Structure (4 short paragraphs, total 250–350 words):

Paragraph 1 — The Hook (2–3 sentences): State the specific role you're applying for and why this company specifically interests you. Research the company before writing — mention something real about their work.

Avoid: "I am writing to apply for the position of Digital Marketing Executive." (generic)

Better: "I'm applying for the Digital Marketing Executive role at [Company]. I've followed [Company]'s work on [specific project or client or content they published] — the way you approached [specific thing] stood out to me. I'd like to bring that same thinking to your team."

Paragraph 2 — Your Relevant Experience and Skills (3–4 sentences): What specifically qualifies you for this role? Reference 1–2 specific accomplishments with numbers.

"During my digital marketing course at MITS Academy, I managed a Google Ads test campaign with ₹2,000 budget and achieved a 3.2% CTR — above the industry average of 2%. I also managed an Instagram page from 0 to 400 followers using organic Reels strategy over 8 weeks. I hold Google Digital Garage and Meta Blueprint certifications."

Paragraph 3 — Why You + Why Them (2–3 sentences): Connect your skills to their specific needs. Show you understand what they do and what they need.

"Your recent [campaign/project/client work] suggests your team values [specific quality]. My background in [relevant skill] directly applies to that, and I'm eager to contribute [specific way]."

Paragraph 4 — Call to Action (1–2 sentences): Request next step clearly.

"I'd welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute. I'm available for a call or demo at your convenience — my number is [phone], email is [email]."

---

What to Avoid

Generic opening: Never start with "I am writing to apply for..." — every cover letter starts this way.

Repeating your resume: Cover letters should complement, not repeat. Resume lists skills and experience; cover letter explains why this combination of skills fits this specific role and company.

Lengthy paragraphs: Keep each paragraph under 4 sentences. Hiring managers skim.

Grammatical errors: Spell-check everything. A spelling mistake in a cover letter signals carelessness.

"I am hardworking and dedicated": Everyone says this. It means nothing. Show, don't tell — give a specific example instead.
