"I have done Tally from XYZ institute — why am I not getting hired?"
This is something we hear from students who come to MITS Academy after learning Tally somewhere else. They know the software but they are not getting offers. Here is why — and how to actually land a Tally accounting job in Amritsar or Jalandhar in 2026.
Who actually hires for Tally in Amritsar and Jalandhar
Trading and wholesale firms Jalandhar and Amritsar are major trading hubs — sports goods, hosiery, textiles, hardware, food distribution. These businesses hire accounts executives constantly. They need: - Daily voucher entry (sales, purchase, payment, receipt) - GST invoicing and basic GSTR-3B data - Bank reconciliation - Stock management (especially in Busy)
Volume: This is the largest employer category for fresh Tally candidates in both cities.
Manufacturing exporters Jalandhar's sports goods and Amritsar's food processing sector hire accounts staff who understand multi-currency, export documentation basics, and sometimes foreign trade accounting in Tally.
CA firms and accounting consultancies Every CA firm in Amritsar and Jalandhar needs trained staff for bookkeeping, GST filing support, and TDS work. Starting salaries at CA firms are lower (₹8,000–12,000/month) but the experience is excellent — you see 20–50 different businesses' accounts in 2 years.
Retail chains and organised retail D-Mart, Big Bazaar, and regional retail chains operating in Punjab hire accounts assistants who know Tally for point-of-sale reconciliation and inventory management.
IT companies in Mohali (for those willing to commute or relocate) Mid-size IT companies in Mohali hire accounts executives with Tally + Excel + GST knowledge for their finance teams. These roles pay ₹15,000–22,000/month for freshers.
Realistic salary for Tally freshers in Punjab 2026
| Experience level | Role | Monthly salary |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher (Tally basic only) | Data entry / Accounts assistant | ₹7,000–11,000 |
| Fresher (Tally + GST + TDS) | Accounts executive | ₹12,000–18,000 |
| Fresher (Tally + Busy + GST + Excel) | Senior accounts executive | ₹14,000–20,000 |
| 2 years experience | Accountant | ₹20,000–35,000 |
| 5 years + CA inter | Finance manager | ₹35,000–65,000 |
The single biggest salary differentiator at fresher level is whether you know GST filing (not just Tally entry). Employers pay ₹3,000–6,000/month more for someone who can handle GSTR-3B reconciliation independently.
Why Tally freshers are not getting hired — the real reasons
1. They only know data entry If you can enter a sales invoice in Tally but cannot explain what GST input tax credit is, most employers will not hire you for anything above minimum wage. The software skill is necessary but not sufficient.
2. No Excel Every accounts job in Punjab requires basic Excel. If you cannot do VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and format a P&L statement in Excel, you are missing a core skill.
3. No understanding of GST fundamentals You do not need to be a GST expert. But you must understand the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, what input tax credit means, and how to reconcile the two. Employers test this.
4. Institute only taught the software, not the workflow Knowing which menu to click in Tally is not the same as knowing how to manage a company's month-end closing. Good training includes simulated company accounts from Day 1 to Day 30 of a month, not just individual transactions.
How to make yourself more hireable as a Tally fresher
- •. Get the Tally Certified Professional (TCP) certificate — Tally Solutions conducts online exams. Passing Level 1 and Level 2 validates your skills officially. Employers respect it.
2. Learn GST filing basics — enroll in a GST practitioner short course or make sure your Tally course includes hands-on GST filing simulation.
3. Build an Excel portfolio — create a sample P&L, a bank reconciliation, and a salary sheet in Excel and bring it to interviews. Most candidates show nothing.
4. Intern or work part-time during training — many small trading firms in Amritsar and Jalandhar give unpaid or low-paid intern spots. 3 months of real accounts experience is more valuable than any certificate.
5. Know Busy, not just Tally — in Jalandhar's trading sector, many employers use Busy. Being the candidate who knows both immediately doubles your options.
Tally vs moving to IT: the honest trade-off
Some B.Com/BBA students ask us whether they should do Tally or switch to an IT course (Python, data analytics, digital marketing).
Honest comparison:
| Tally / Accounting | IT / Tech career | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first job | 2–4 months | 6–12 months |
| Starting salary | ₹10,000–18,000/month | ₹12,000–25,000/month |
| 5-year ceiling | ₹30,000–60,000/month | ₹50,000–2,00,000+/month |
| Risk | Low | Medium |
| Local job availability | High — everywhere | Medium — mostly Mohali/remote |
If your goal is stable employment locally within 3–4 months, Tally is the right choice. If your goal is higher long-term income and you have 8–12 months to invest in training, an IT career pays significantly more.
Many MITS Academy students do a Tally + basic IT combo — Tally for immediate employability, plus Python basics or Digital Marketing for longer-term growth.
